But the material I work with in my studio is built in a completely different way. It’s designed to look woven and natural, yet behave like something you can actually live with: durable, smooth, washable, and made to stay beautiful for years.
It Starts With a Needle (Not a Factory)
Craft wicker begins with paper strips — and then the real work starts.
Each strip is rolled by hand into a tube around a metal knitting needle of a specific thickness. Different needle sizes create different tube diameters, and that changes everything: the texture, the density, the rhythm of the weave, and even which designs are possible.
That’s how I can create both:
- fine, delicate patterns for light objects, and
- thicker, more structural weaves for larger pieces.
There is no “one tube fits all.” Every design begins at this first step.
Strength Comes From Structure — Even Before Weaving
A rolled tube isn’t just “paper.” It’s a layered spiral. When it’s rolled tightly and consistently, it becomes a strong, elastic strand.
Before I even start weaving, the tubes are colored and prepared so they have the right flexibility for the design. At this stage, the material already behaves very differently from what people expect — resilient, stable, and ready to hold shape.
In everyday use, this prepared structure can feel more reliable than many natural weaving fibers, because it doesn’t depend on a single “grain” that can dry out and become brittle over time.
The Real Masterpiece Is the Treatment
Weaving is only half the story.
What makes my craft wicker pieces truly premium — the part that turns them into something you can trust in daily life — is the finishing process.
Before weaving, tubes are:
- colored
- treated
- moisturized to reach the right flexibility
And once a piece is complete, it’s finished again in layers to add:
- strength and firmness
- surface protection
- a smooth, refined feel
I use wood impregnations/primers and multiple layers of varnish, and I choose water-based materials — low-odor and safe to use in a home.
For me, quality isn’t a slogan. It’s the point of the whole process.
Yes — It’s Water-Friendly (You Can Wash It Properly)
This is the part that surprises people most.
My pieces don’t need “delicate handling.” You can clean them the way real life requires:
- wash with a soft sponge
- use non-abrasive cleaners
- rinse gently and dry
In other words: you don’t have to panic if the basket gets messy. It’s made for living spaces — including family homes.
Any Color, Precisely Matched
Another reason I love this material: it can be finished in almost any color.
That means you’re not limited to “whatever natural rattan looks like.” You can match a tone to your interior — warm neutrals, soft greys, deeper browns, muted greens, or a statement shade — and get a piece that feels like it truly belongs in your space.
No Drying Out. No Splinters. No Hidden “Breaking Points”
Natural woven materials can dry out over time. They can crack. They can break in sharp places. Sometimes, that even leads to splinters — the last thing you want in a high-touch home.
Craft wicker doesn’t behave that way. With its rolled structure and layered, water-based finishing, it stays smooth and stable — which is exactly what I want for pieces used around children, pets, and everyday routines.
Not Only Decor — This Material Can Become Furniture
One important point: craft wicker isn’t limited to small interior accessories.
With the right construction, it can be used for larger, structural pieces too:
- tables (including larger tables)
- shelves and wall pieces
- headboards
- nightstands
- poufs
- cabinets and wardrobes (depending on the design)
For furniture and larger interior pieces, I use natural wood frames. The frame carries the structure — and the weaving becomes the crafted surface and form.
Even when the frame isn’t visible, it matters. My frames are carefully built: sanded smooth, securely joined, painted, and varnished. It’s craftsmanship all the way through — not only in what you see, but also in what you don’t.
